| Gallipoli is a town of 21,148 inhabitants of Salento along the west coast of the province of Lecce, in southern Puglia. It is the fifth center in the province by number of inhabitants. Overlooking the Ionian Sea and is divided into two parts, the village and the historic center. The first is the most recent part of the city, built on a peninsula that reaches out in the Ionian Sea to the west, which includes all new construction, such as the palace of glass (also called the skyscraper). The old town, however, lies on an island of calcareous origin, linked to the mainland by a seventeenth-century arched bridge. Of great historical importance is the nature island of St. Andrew, about a mile off the old town. |
